Nature and Biodiversity of the Sierra de la Pila
The Sierra de la Pila is one of the great natural treasures of the inland Region of Murcia, a protected area of outstanding landscape value located in the surroundings of Abarán. Its mountains, ravines and extensive pine forests create an ideal setting to disconnect and enjoy nature at its purest.
With peaks rising above 1,200 metres in elevation, this mountain range offers breathtaking panoramic views and an extensive network of trails, making it a perfect destination for hiking, mountain biking and wildlife watching, particularly for observing birds of prey such as the golden eagle and peregrine falcon.
History and Rural Heritage
In addition to its natural wealth, the Sierra de la Pila preserves an important historical and cultural heritage linked to rural life and ancient livestock routes.
One of its most notable trails is the Territory of Jaime el Barbudo Route, a route that recalls the presence of the famous bandit who used these mountains as a refuge during the first decades of the 19th century. Along the route, visitors can explore the emblematic Cueva de la Excomunión (Cave of Excommunication), a place closely associated with his history and the legends of the area.
The Abrevadero de las Pocicas and Livestock-Grazing Traditions
Another of the park's most distinctive sites is the Abrevadero de las Pocicas, a traditional watering place that was used for centuries by local livestock farmers and by transhumant herders travelling along the ancient livestock routes. This site takes advantage of the natural spring that emerges in the ravine where it is located, making it a key resource both for historical livestock farming and for wildlife, which finds an essential source of water here within its natural habitat.
The Sierra de la Pila thus combines nature, history and tradition, offering visitors a unique experience where spectacular landscapes, biodiversity and the living traces of Abarán's rural past come together.
