A pioneering building in Abarán’s cultural life

The Children’s Library of the Paseo de la Ermita in Abarán was inaugurated in 1956, becoming the first municipal library in the town. Located in one of Abarán’s most emblematic areas, the Paseo de la Ermita, the building is part of a unique urban and landscape setting overlooking the Segura Valley and the traditional orchard landscape.

Today, the building no longer functions as a library; instead, it has been transformed into a cultural space and exhibition hall, while preserving its symbolic value as one of the municipality’s earliest centres for cultural dissemination.

Architecture and artistic value

The building reflects the mid-20th-century architectural style, characterized by a functional and restrained design typical of public constructions of its time. Its composition blends into the elevated setting of the Ermita hill, prioritizing harmony with the landscape rather than monumentality.

One of its most remarkable features is the ornamental fountain within the complex, created by the Murcian sculptor Nicolás Martínez Ramón, which adds significant artistic value to the site. This sculptural work introduces a refined visual language in which water, stone, and the surrounding landscape combine to create a meeting point between art and environment.

A cultural viewpoint in the heart of the town

The Paseo de la Ermita is one of Abarán’s best-known viewpoints, a place where nature, religious heritage, and social life come together. The former library is set within this privileged context, becoming a key landmark in the town’s urban and cultural routes.

Heritage and collective memory

Beyond its original function, the Children’s Library of the Ermita represents an important milestone in Abarán’s cultural history. Its evolution—from a children’s library to an exhibition space—reflects the town’s development and its commitment to preserving heritage and promoting culture in a unique landscape setting.
