Created by the sculptor Manuel Nicolás Almansa, this bronze sculptural ensemble pays tribute to the deep maritime traditions of Los Alcázares and to the close relationship between its people and the sea. The scene portrays a fisherman who, after a long and demanding day at sea, drags an empty net with great effort — a reflection of the hardship and sacrifice that shaped the lives of generations of fishermen. Behind him appear two mermaids riding seahorses, allegorical figures representing the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean Sea. Moved by the fisherman’s futile effort, these mythical creatures place fish into his net, bringing a poetic and symbolic sense of hope to the composition. Blending realism and fantasy, the monument recalls the historical importance of fishing in the economy and cultural identity of Los Alcázares. Facing the sea, it invites both residents and visitors to discover the town’s maritime heritage and to reflect on the enduring bond between people and the waters that have given life to this land for centuries.
