A treasure of traditional irrigation in the Valle de Ricote
The Noria de la Hoya de Don García is one of the most representative elements of Abarán’s traditional irrigation system and forms part of the historic group of water wheels in the Valle de Ricote. Located on the banks of the Segura River, along the well-known Ruta de las Norias, this hydraulic device preserves the agricultural heritage that has shaped the landscape of the Vega Alta region for centuries.
History and technical characteristics
Originally built in 1818, the current structure is a faithful reconstruction carried out in 1951, preserving its traditional design. It has a diameter of 8.2 meters and is mainly constructed from wood, with an iron axle and fittings, following the classic design of river water wheels in southeastern Spain.
It is supplied by the Blanca's main irrigation canal and lifts water from the Segura River to irrigate approximately 233 tahúllas of traditional farmland, an historical local unit still used in the area.
Operation and landscape value
The water wheel operates using the force of the river current, which turns the wheel fitted with buckets (cangilones), allowing water to be lifted continuously without external energy. This ancestral system represents not only an ingenious example of hydraulic engineering, but also a perfect adaptation to the semi-arid Mediterranean environment.

Today, the Noria de la Hoya de Don García is a key stop along the Ruta de las Norias in Abarán, a scenic walking trail that passes through orchards, irrigation channels, and riverside landscapes. Its surroundings, close to natural areas such as El Menjú, offer visitors an authentic experience combining nature, history, and water culture.
