A unique historical landmark
The Noria Grande of Abarán is one of the most distinctive symbols of hydraulic heritage in the Region of Murcia and a must-visit site for those wishing to discover the essence of the Ricote Valley. Located next to the Segura River, within the Parque de las Norias, this impressive structure combines history, traditional engineering, and landscape in a setting of remarkable natural beauty.

Built in 1805, the Noria Grande is still in operation today, making it one of the oldest and best-preserved water wheels in Europe. With a diameter of approximately 11.9 meters, it is considered the largest functioning irrigation water wheel on the continent, a true living testament to traditional water management systems.

Engineering, water, and landscape
Its original purpose — which it still fulfills — is to lift water from the river using a wheel fitted with buckets. Powered by the river’s current, the wheel turns continuously, raising approximately 25 liters of water per second, which historically allowed the irrigation of around 155 tahúllas (traditional local units of farmland) in the orchards of Abarán.

Beyond its technical value, the Noria Grande represents the deep relationship between people and water in this semi-arid Mediterranean region. For centuries, this ingenious system was essential for the agricultural development of the area, shaping the landscape of orchards and irrigation channels that still define the valley today.

Living heritage and visitor experience
Rebuilt in 1951 while preserving its original design, the structure combines wood and iron to ensure durability and has since become one of Abarán’s main cultural symbols.

Today, visiting the Noria Grande means immersing yourself in an environment where tradition and nature come together. It forms part of the popular Route of the Water Wheels, a scenic trail that allows visitors to discover other historic water wheels while enjoying riverside paths, lush vegetation, and unique agricultural landscapes.

In short, the Noria Grande is not just an engineering structure: it is a living icon of Abarán’s history, culture, and identity, capable of transporting visitors to a time when human ingenuity and nature worked in perfect harmony.
