Location
The Virgen del Oro Church is located in the neighborhood of the same name in the municipality of Abarán. Set on the slopes of the Sierra del Oro, facing the town center and on the opposite side of the Segura River, it enjoys a distinctive setting that combines natural scenery with proximity to the urban area.
History
This church is the most recent religious construction in the municipality of Abarán. It is dedicated to Santa María del Oro, the town’s patron saint, and takes its name both from this Marian devotion and from the neighborhood in which it stands.
Although a hermitage traditionally existed in this area linked to the devotion to the Virgen del Oro, the current church belongs to a more recent phase of urban and religious development, serving as a place of worship for the local community.
Architecture
The building features a circular floor plan, an uncommon typology that gives it a distinctive character within the local religious heritage. It is a freestanding two-story structure with an entrance porch and a bell tower, elements that enhance both its functionality and architectural presence.
Its simple and modern design responds to the needs of the parish community while blending harmoniously with the surrounding landscape.
Interior and Artistic Elements
The interior houses various devotional images and artworks. The main altarpiece features the image of the Virgen del Oro, patron saint of Abarán, depicted with the Child in a polychrome wooden sculpture created by the sculptor Domingo Blázquez.
Other notable works include Saint Anthony (San Antón), created by Juan Carrillo in 1952; the Sacred Heart of Jesus, attributed to Sánchez Araciel (early 20th century); a Crucifixion painting by Federico Ramos, dated around 1890; as well as polychrome sculptures of the Holy Family, Saint Raphael, and the Dolorosa, among others.
