VIRGEN DEL ORO (ABARÁN)
Information
A sanctuary in a privileged natural setting
The
Sanctuary of the Virgen del Oro is located in the
Sierra del Oro, facing the town of Abarán on the opposite side of the Segura River, in an elevated natural area of outstanding landscape value. This site has traditionally been the place of devotion to the
Virgen del Oro, patron saint of Abarán, making it one of the municipality’s most emblematic religious and scenic landmarks.
History and development of the site
An ancient hermitage dedicated to the Virgin once stood here and was later expanded and improved thanks to the initiative of the priest
Antonio Yelo Templado, who promoted the creation of a larger complex intended to strengthen religious worship and preserve the sanctuary. The project also included an
adjacent religious residence, designed to support the upkeep of the church and its surroundings.
Architecture of the complex
The building is a freestanding
two-storey structure, featuring an
entrance porch and a
bell gable (espadaña), fully integrated into the mountain landscape. Its architecture is simple and functional, adapted to the natural environment of the Sierra del Oro.
Interior and artistic heritage
Inside, the sanctuary houses an important collection of religious images and artworks, with the
main altarpiece presided over by the Virgen del Oro, the town’s patron saint. Numerous chapels and niches contain valuable sculptures and paintings of devotional significance.
Notable works include the image of the Virgen del Oro by
Domingo Blázquez, Saint Anthony (Juan Carrillo, 1952), the Sacred Heart attributed to Sánchez Araciel, a 1890 oil painting of the Crucifixion by Federico Ramos, the Sorrowful Virgin by José Sánchez Lozano, as well as a
Thirteen-Figure Last Supper group representing Jesus and the twelve apostles, among other pieces.
Tradition and religious life
The sanctuary is deeply connected to Abarán’s traditions. Every year, during the festivities of
San Cosme and San Damián, the traditional
“descent” of the Virgen del Oro takes place, bringing the image down to the town center, one of the most important expressions of local devotion.
Starting point of the Mirador de la Cruz hiking trail
The Sanctuary of the Virgen del Oro is also a key reference point for outdoor tourism, as it marks the
starting point of the Mirador de la Cruz hiking trail, a marked route that climbs through the Sierra del Oro to one of the most outstanding viewpoints in the Abarán area, offering panoramic views over the Segura Valley and its traditional agricultural landscape.
A place of faith, art, and landscape
Beyond its religious significance, the sanctuary is a
privileged natural viewpoint over the Segura Valley, where heritage, nature, and tradition come together, making it an essential visit within the tourist experience of Abarán.
