Las Lomas del Rame • 30710 LAS LOMAS DEL RAME (LOS ALCÁZARES)
Located on the historic boundary between the councils of Cartagena and Murcia, this rural tower was built in the late 16th century by Don Diego Bienvengud Rosique, captain and councillor of Cartagena. Its purpose was to protect his estates —Hoya Morena and El Ramí— from the frequent raids of Barbary pirates along the coast. It is believed that the tower was constructed on the remains of an earlier structure of Arab origin, known as the Tower of Faraich Arramin (Faray the Crossbowman), mentioned in the Book of the Repartimiento of Murcia of Alfonso X el Sabio in the 13th century. This building formed part of an extensive network of watchtowers developed throughout the 16th century. Together with royal and municipal towers, these private fortifications played a key role in defending the coastline against corsair attacks, during a period marked by the alliance between the Ottoman Empire and the North African sultanates. A historical landmark that transports visitors to a time of vigilance and coastal defense in the Mediterranean.
Fortaleza de origen árabe que formó parte del sistema vigía de las costa del Mar Menor y que durante el repoblamiento castellano fue remodelada para prevenir las incursiones piratas por el litoral mediterráneo.
