Fluvial Nature Reserve and Protected Area within the Natura 2000 network (Special Area of Conservation, SAC). The Chícamo River is one of the most environmentally significant river stretches in the Region of Murcia. The river lies entirely within the municipality of Abanilla, in the Segura River basin, and flows through a striking landscape shaped by unique geological and ecological conditions.  It runs through a semi-arid environment dominated by gypsum-rich formations that have been heavily sculpted by erosion over time. This has created a dramatic landscape of ravines, gullies, and characteristic badland terrain. Despite the dry surroundings, some sections of the river maintain permanent water flow, allowing well-developed riverside vegetation to thrive and supporting a variety of important microhabitats.
 
From a geological point of view, the Chícamo displays typical erosion and sedimentation processes found in Mediterranean rivers with high mineral content. Combined with the region’s Mediterranean climate, these factors give the area exceptional natural, scientific, and scenic value.  The Protected Area recommends: The Chícamo River Nature Reserve offers various opportunities for public access and respectful contact with nature, including traditional activities that are carried out in the area and have a low environmental impact.

The Protected Area recommends: - Hiking along the riverbed and existing footpaths, allowing visitors to explore representative sections of the river landscape and observe its natural assets. - Wildlife and flora observation, with particular interest in waterbirds and species associated with riparian environments. - Enjoying the badland scenery and wetland areas, contrasting the dryness of the slopes with the riverside vegetation that accompanies the river channel. - Nature photography, taking advantage of the diversity of environments, the textures of the gypsum landscape, and the river’s flowing water.  These activities should be carried out in a respectful manner towards the environment, following established conservation rules and avoiding any disturbance to fauna, vegetation, or natural processes.  The upper section of the Chícamo River is designated as a Fluvial Nature Reserve, a protection status that highlights both the ecological quality of the river channel and the natural processes taking place within it.  This area is included within the Natura 2000 network as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC): Chícamo River. Previously, it was designated as a Site of Community Importance (SCI).
The river also forms part of the network of Fluvial Nature Reserves due to the ecological value of its ecosystems.

Nature

Flora

The vegetation in the Chícamo River area is dominated by well-developed riparian plant communities, directly associated with the presence of water along sections of the river channel:
• Tamarisk (Tamarix sp.), common on riverbanks and margins with either permanent or seasonal moisture. 
• Common reed (Phragmites australis) and rushes (Juncus sp.), found in dense vegetated areas linked to water presence. 
These species form linear belts of vegetation that contrast with the surrounding Mediterranean scrub adapted to drier conditions on the adjacent slopes. 
In the immediate surroundings of the Chícamo River and its tributary gullies, the distinctive Iberian date palm (Phoenix iberica) can also be found, a highly characteristic and unique feature of the landscape in this area. In the drier zones with mineral soils, communities adapted to arid environments predominate, including:
• Esparto grass (Stipa tenacissima)
• Thyme (Thymus sp.)
• Other species typical of dry Mediterranean scrub.
The combination of riparian vegetation and dry scrub creates a distinctive plant mosaic characteristic of river systems in south-eastern Spain. 

Fauna

The river supports a diverse range of wildlife associated with aquatic environments and riparian habitats: • Waterbirds, including the common kingfisher, frequently found along rivers and streams.
• Steppe birds, notably the trumpeter finch.
• Amphibians such as the natterjack toad, which inhabits wet areas and calm pools in the river.
• Reptiles and other fauna associated with river environments and the transition zones between wet and dry habitats. 
• Fish, including Iberian species of high conservation value linked to Mediterranean aquatic ecosystems.
• Small mammals such as the beech marten, as well as a variety of aquatic invertebrates that find food and shelter in this environment. This diversity makes the Chícamo River an important site for wildlife observation and environmental education.

• Public use centred on hiking, enjoying the landscape, and wildlife observation.
• Educational and environmental interpretation activities, which draw on the river’s natural and geomorphological significance.

Equipamiento

• A site of scientific interest, given the representative nature of its river ecosystems within the Segura basin and the south-eastern Iberian Peninsula.
Facilities In the river’s surroundings there is the Molino Harinero (flour mill), a site of historical and architectural interest. It is currently closed to the public and is owned by the Irrigation Community of Huerta de Abajo and Sahués.
