A Beautiful Place to Discover
The Sierra del Oro is one of Abarán’s main natural attractions, located in the heart of the Ricote Valley, in the Region of Murcia. This mountain range rises to over 900 metres above sea level, offering a rugged landscape of great beauty, characterised by limestone formations and typical Mediterranean vegetation.
From its peaks, such as Pico del Oro (927 m) and Pico del Portazgo (952 m), visitors can enjoy impressive panoramic views over the Segura River valley, the surrounding mountain ranges and the area’s traditional agricultural landscapes.
The origin of its name is linked to old local legends about the existence of gold in its mountains, which has contributed to its cultural and historical appeal.
Hiking in the Sierra del Oro
The Sierra del Oro is an ideal destination for hiking enthusiasts, with routes that allow visitors to discover its landscapes, viewpoints and ravines:
- Fuente de Benito Route
Located at the southern end of the mountain range, this route is dominated by the Estrecho de la Rambla de Benito. It is a rugged area where water has carved pools into the limestone rock. The route features various elements of cultural interest, including the old Esparto Grass Factory, the Camino del Losado, cave houses, ruined buildings and traditional dry-stone walls.
- Mirador de la Cruz Trail Route
This itinerary enters the mountain range via the historic Hoya del Pino path. It begins at the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Oro and ends at the Mirador de la Cruz, located at the highest point of Cabezo del Mortero. Its name refers to a prehistoric cup-mark feature found in the surrounding area.

The Sierra del Oro is a perfect place for hiking, trail running or simply enjoying nature at any time of the year. Its combination of mountains, culture and scenery makes it one of the most representative natural areas in inland Murcia.
