A Landscape of Water, Orchards and Heritage

Las Canales de Abarán are a unique natural and traditional landscape within the Huerta de Abarán, located alongside the Segura River in the Ricote Valley. The area preserves irrigation channels, ditches and historic water conduits that reflect the importance of water culture and traditional agricultural practices.

Las Canales form part of the well-known Norias Route of Abarán, connecting the Noria Grande with the Hoya de Don García Waterwheel. The route offers visitors the opportunity to discover the close relationship between the river, the orchards and the traditional hydraulic infrastructure.

Traces of the Old Acequia de Abarán

One of its main heritage features is the remains of the original Acequia Principal de Abarán, an old irrigation system adapted to the rocky slopes along the river. Two sections of the original irrigation channel have been preserved, providing an insight into the former headwaters of the Huerta de Abarán and the historical development of its irrigation system.

These structures are the only surviving heritage elements that provide a direct insight into the original configuration of this part of the orchard landscape, making Las Canales a particularly interesting place for understanding the history of traditional water management.

A Landscape of Great Agricultural Value

Las Canales represent the combination of nature, traditional orchards and hydraulic heritage. The Segura River, irrigation channels, waterwheels and traditional crops create a landscape that preserves the memory of a way of life closely connected to water.

The area surrounding the Norias of Abarán was declared a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC), with the category of Ethnographic Site, in 2018, recognising the historical, cultural and landscape value of this heritage complex.

Walking through Las Canales means discovering one of the most representative corners of Abarán and the Ricote Valley, where the waters of the Segura River have been a source of life, agriculture and heritage for centuries.
